6 Ways of dealing with annoying relatives during the holidays

The type of relatives you might want to avoid

During the festive season, there is a lot of people who we might not enjoy being with. Dealing with relatives during the holidays can be hard. Not because we are related to people means that we have to like them. We might have homophobic, racist, and xenophobic uncles, parents, or cousins. Then there js the jealous type of relative that won’t stop bothering you about either how you look or if you have a partner. I hope this is the type of person you are trying to avoid.

What to do:

1. Let your pride go

If you seek to be nice and not start anything you have to let your pride go. This means that it doesn’t matter how stupid they are making you look or how embarrassing it is the key is to not care.

2. Avoid conflict to avoid drama

This is a basic principle to avoid gossip created around you because of something you did. If you avoid conflict in these events there won’t be ant drama and the family event will hopefully not be ruined

3. If you want drama though, do your research beforehand

If the thing gets political and you are searching to win a battle against your racist and homophobic uncle, then get your statistics straight. Even though they probably won’t tell you you’re right but if you want the drama get it. It is important to remember that other people are trying to enjoy their night so don’t ruin it for them.

4. Think everything through before you talk:

We don’t want to end up saying hurtful things out of topic to people we love just because we want to prove our point right. Avoid personal insults or just insults in general.

5. Who is the one that ends up looking bad?

Every choice has its consequences, be aware of what you want to accomplish and how it affects everyone around you, to be a better person we have to be considerate of others

6. Calm down

My last step is to remind you that no matter what your relatives tell you they can’t change who you are and they can change what you have been through. Never let them bring you down. Take some deep breaths and relax, calm wins all

Alternative step

If it’s your house and they get aggressive you can always kick them out nicely. This is your decision of course but if it gets to the point that such a person is ruining the night and hurting people that are important to you.

I really hope you can enjoy your holidays even with annoying people around you. Don’t let people get in the way of your happiness but also don’t get in the way of anyone else. Respect people if you expect them to respect you. Remember your values when entering discussions and stick to what’s right.
