8 Secrets To Help You Go Through Your Negative Emotions

Why is it necessary to feel them?

Emotions are made to help us processes our thoughts. We react to everything that happens around us in very different ways and how we handle our emotions varies from person to person. Some people tend to have a really hard time letting go of them. Some negative emotions might feel comforting and normal even if they are degrading them. Happy feelings feel uncomfortable for these people because they are not used to them, therefore creating a vicious cycle of staying in a bad place.

Sometimes conventional ways of handling emotions don’t work and we have to leave it all to us internally. The mind can accomplish a lot of things and it can help you change how you feel if you use it correctly. It is not about hiding your feelings or repressing them till they go away, this is just going to hide them. It is about letting yourself feel the emotions in your own special way to then allow them to go.

How to get past negative emotions

Give them a place

Giving your emotions a place in your body will allow you to locate the emotion and feel less overwhelmed by it. It will make the emotion smaller rather than bigger than you. Let’s say I feel angry, in my case I will feel the anger up my throat and near my chest. Limiting this emotion to a certain place in my body will make me feel safer.

Give them a color

Assigning a color to your emotions will make them seem a lot more familiar. For example, the color that I would put to my anger would be a reddish-orange tone. This will allow us to visualize the emotion more.

Give them texture

Giving texture to emotion is like giving it a personality. It allows you to further define the emotion and maybe give it roughness or softness. Ask yourself, how does it feel?

See them going through your body

After giving the emotion that you are feeling a personality, a color, and a place in your body, try to imagine it moving through. Picture it moving through your body, it can be slowly or fast. You can have it move in a specific way that goes according to that emotion. The important thing is to watch it leave your body.

Don’t tell yourself that you ARE your emotions but that you HAVE them

Certain phrases that we use like “I am sad” or “I am angry” makes us become one from our emotions, what we want is to detach ourselves from the negative ones and don’t fully embody them. Recognize them for what they are, emotions passing by and not something that you become.

Talk about it

Talking about your emotions is always healthy. It helps you release them and also get input on how you feel from another person. It also allows you to help them pass faster through your body. Although it is important to not obsess over these emotions because it can make it harder to let go. The point of it is talking about it to get closure.

Don’t let them take over your life

It is important to not let your emotions take over your life. As I mentioned earlier, obsession over your emotions can make it dangerous for you because you seem to not forget about that issue in your life. It is hard to not concentrate on the negative things in your life and really easy to get in your head and only think about that.

Thank them for coming by, but let them go

You are supposed to feel your emotions and understand why are they there for. But you are also responsible for letting them go. So a good way to do this is by thanking them for being here, listening to what they have to say to you in a way, and letting them pass by. This way you get what you needed from them and you don’t let them consume you.
