Why does changing your old habits hurt?

Old habits

Old habits form who we are now. Some of these may be good while others will harm us the more we perform them. Bad old habits could include addiction, procrastination, and certain beliefs or behaviors that harm others and ourselves. These behaviors that we perform constantly, sometimes on a daily basis have been reinforced over years. That is why they are called habits cause it is now something that you do automatically. They have become our comfort zone and who we are. So what if we want to change? What happens if we decide that the life that we are living doesn’t make us the happiest? Well, then it is time to change.

Why does it hurt?

Getting out of your comfort zone is one of the most mentally painful and exhausting things in the world. That is why there needs to be a determination to do it. There needs to be a breaking moment in which someone decides that their life has become so boring or repeating that they need change. Making this change is going to take a big amount of willpower to do. Because not only will it take time, patience and perseverance, but pain.

Why can it be scary?

Changing can be scary because you can end up alone. People don’t like when you change is because it is no longer convenient for them that you are more aware of your mistakes and of your weaknesses. It can be scary to lose people that you love but it is important to know that if they don’t like you changing they are taking advantage of you. People often do it unconsciously so maybe they are not trying to manipulate you on purpose but ultimately are affecting you.

To get to the end of the rollercoaster there are ups and downs. The downs are from where you learn the most about yourself, your patterns, and your behaviors. A lot of what we do is shaped by the way our parents raised us, childhood experiences, and traumas at an early age. This means that to heal them you have to dig deep and open those wounds again so they can heal properly.

Relapsing

This is the scariest part of changing. When you go back into old habits it can be really comfortable because it is more comfortable than your comfort zone because you moved it up. Your comfort zone has now expanded and you allow yourself to explore new things. Going back to the old makes you feel safer than before. It is important to keep your stance and put yourself first. Going back is not an option. Think back to everything that you have overcome and achieved by growing and understand that. Although everyone can have moments in which we feel low, ultimately to keep changing for the best is the correct option.
